Hala Director Minhal Baig On Making A Movie For First Generation Muslim-Americans

Image
By Monica Castillo Minhal Baig’s coming-of-age drama Hala is an intimate look at the experience of growing up as a Muslim-American teenaged girl in America. In addition to normal teen anxieties like worrying about college and fitting in, Hala ( Geraldine Viswanathan ) also has to abide by her conservative Pakistani parents’ rules. For example, Hala is not allowed to stay out late or hang out with boys, even at the skatepark she often frequents. So when she starts to develop feelings for a classmate, she has to manage this new set of emotions with her parents’ expectations. Hala is about someone finding their voice and identity, a universal concept. But the film also captures an experience rarely told on-screen. There’s so much nuance in Hala’s story, enriching the movie with details that feel relatable to just about any first or second generation child of immigrants. Hala earned thunderous reception at its Sundance premiere over the weekend, so much so that Apple acquired the ...

Where Are They Now? Ravens Super Bowl Hero Jacoby Jones Isn’t Done with Football

Image
Patrick Smith/Getty Images He’s still outrunning everyone. Nobody’s close, either. On a football field, at full stride, Jacoby Jones has nothing but green in front of him and dances like there’s no tomorrow when the damage is done. Of course, instead of playing the hero in a Super Bowl , today he’s at Division II Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. At a practice. With no fans in the stands. And instead of leaving the San Francisco 49ers in his dust as a blur of a returner for the Baltimore Ravens, he’s a wide receivers coach for his alma mater. It’s a new vocation he took up this past fall, and it suits him. With his cleats on, gloves strapped tight and ankles spatted up, he runs routes with everybody. He stalks behind the school’s kick returner, shouting instruction in real time so the kid sees what he sees. He’s always open to a race. And he always wins. “I’m like, ‘Boy, you don’t want this s–t,” Jones says. “I take off running with them and look at ’em and start stridin...

Ariana Grande Fixed Her ‘Grill’ Tattoo And Now All Is Right In The World

By Trey Alston What better way to celebrate the success of a new single than with a tattoo? Ariana Grande did just that earlier this week with some Japanese ink for the recently released “ 7 Rings .” There was only one problem though: What she thought it read as wasn’t what it really meant . In a rush to celebrate “7 Rings” hitting No. 1 , Grande surprised fans when she posted some new body ink: Japanese kanji characters 七 and 輪, which ( as Kotaku points out ) mean “seven” and “ring” respectively. But together, the characters take on a different meaning entirely – “shichirin” or, in English, “small charcoal grill.” But everything’s good now after some fine-tuning, at least somewhat. Grande shared on Instagram Wedneday night (January 30) that she fixed her tattoo to say “ring” instead of “small charcoal grill.” That’s a win, right? Realizing her blunder, Grande rushed back to the needle to set things right. She added 指, the kanji for “finger.” This makes 指輪 or “yubiwa,” which mean...

Jimmy Butler Is Always Keeping Score

Image
On a bright yet wintry afternoon at an expansive manor in Philadelphia’s suburbs, Jimmy Butler is adding things up. “Whatever you want from this game, win and you can have it,” he says while wearing a 76ers hoodie and sweats, having recently left the team’s practice facility. “Name it. You want money? You want a max deal? If you win, I guarantee you have a better chance of that. You want the finest woman in the world? I guarantee: If you win, you’re going to have a chance at that. You want all the cars, you want the big house—whatever it is—if you win, I guarantee you’ll have a chance at that. Winning is that trump card that everything can be at your fingertips, but you got to win.” Butler has done plenty of winning but is aiming for a destination where legacies are earned. He’s reached the playoffs six times in his seven completed seasons and likely is headed back there this spring. Only twice has he gotten as far as the second round, however, and after a first-round loss with the...

0 of 6 Butch Dill/Associated Press Recruiting is full of twists, turns, spins and flips, but the most dynamic part of college football is almost over in 2019. National signing day is nearly here. And you want to know what will happen. Because December’s early signing period finalizes the majority of decisions from top prospects, there’s a limited group of upper-tier players still on the board. Regarding those, a smaller number of schools are involved in the recruitment of multiple 4- and 5-star players. Consequently, this outlook ended up being exclusively focused on the SEC. That’s simply where the action will be Wednesday, Feb. 6.                     All information is based on the 247Sports ‘ composite rankings. 1 of 6 One way or another, the decision of 5-star receiver George Pickens will be Auburn’s biggest signing-day news. He’s committed to the Tigers but has traveled to LSU, Georgia and Miami—and either Florida...
