Amy Klobuchar drew loud cheers when she reminded Washington Gov. Jay Inslee that there are 3 women on the Democratic debate stage Wednesday ‘who have fought for a woman’s right to choose’

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar threw out a zinger at the first Democratic primary debate on Wednesday, when candidates were asked about their plans for healthcare reform and reproductive freedom. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee teed it up by telling viewers, “It should not be an option in the United States of America for any insurance company to deny women coverage for their exercise of their right of choice.” “And I am the only candidate here who has passed a law protecting a woman’s right of reproductive health and health insurance, and I am the only candidate who has passed a public option,” he added. But Klobuchar after Inslee’s time was up, Klobuchar jumped in. “I just want to say there’s three women up here that have fought pretty hard for a woman’s right to choose,” she said, prompting loud cheers from the audience. Klobuchar was referring to herself, Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii. Julian Castro, the former secretary of Housing and Urb

Libya: GNA-allied forces claim recapture of key town from Haftar

Forces allied to Libya ‘s UN-recognised government say they have retaken Gharyan, a strategic town south of the capital, Tripoli, although forces loyal to renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar denied the claims. Gharyan is the main forward base for the eastern-based Libya National Army (LNA) under Haftar which has been fighting to take control of Tripoli. Mustafa al-Mejii, spokesman for forces loyal to the internationally-recognised Government of National Accord, told AFP news agency: “Gharyan is under our total control.” Dozens of pro-Haftar fighters were killed and at least 18 were taken prisoner, he said. The claim came after the spokesman for Haftar’s forces accused “sleeper cells” of allowing Government of National Accord (GNA) forces to enter part of Gharyan, 100 kilometres southwest of Tripoli, without admitting the loss of the town. He said the fighting was ongoing and that the situation was under control. Witnesses told Reuters that GNA troops seized the main oper

Rockets Trade Rumors: Clint Capela, PJ Tucker, Eric Gordon Shopped Individually

Image
Rick Bowmer/Associated Press The Houston Rockets are reportedly trying to trade either center Clint Capela, shooting guard Eric Gordon or power forward PJ Tucker for the best available first-round draft pick, which they would attempt to flip in a sign-and-trade deal with the Philadelphia 76ers for star guard Jimmy Butler. Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe of ESPN reported the update Wednesday but noted the number of potential suitors is limited because they would need cap space to take on one of those players’ salaries. None of the Rockets’ core players—the three trade candidates mentioned above along with James Harden and Chris Paul—are free agents this summer, so the front office has the option of maintaining the status quo with the hope the Golden State Warriors take a step back next season. Instead, the trade winds continue to gust strong in Houston as general manager Daryl Morey and Co. appear to be ready to shake up a group that’s reached the Western Conference Finals

Facebook might start treating deep fakes differently than fake news, says Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook might start treating deep fakes — photos and videos doctored with artificial intelligence — differently than misinformation or fake news, making it easier for the company to take them down. The remarks came during an interview between Zuckerberg and Harvard law professor Cass Sunstein at the Aspen Ideas Festival on Wednesday. “I definitely think there’s a good case that deep fakes are different than traditional misinformation,” Zuckerberg said. “But I do think that you want to approach this with caution, and by consulting with a lot of experts, and not just acting hastily and unilaterally.” When asked why Facebook doesn’t automatically take down deep fake videos, Zuckerberg hedged, pointing to the difficulty of establishing a precise definition of deep fakes. While some videos are purposefully altered to twist the truth and to misinform, other videos that are edited for journalistic purposes could be at risk of being deemed deep fakes. “This is a top

A KFC franchise owner in a remote area of Australia thinks his restaurant is worthy of a Michelin star

The owner of a KFC franchise in a remote area of Australia thinks his restaurant is worthy of a Michelin star. Sam Edelman, who runs an outpost for the popular American fried chicken chain in the northern town of Alice Springs, Australia, created a Facebook group called “Kentucky Fried Chicken deserves a Michelin Star” last week in his bid for the crowning achievement of culinary success. “Technically we meet the criteria … so let’s just see how we go!” the group’s description reads. The Michelin guide is published each year and ranks restaurants around the world using a three-star rating system , which distinguishes restaurants that are “worth a stop”, “detour” or in the most impressive cases are worth a “special journey.” According to its website , ratings are based on five criteria, including food quality, mastery, personality, value, and consistency. Michelin does not publish a guide in Australia and does not include Australian restaurants in its rating system. Edelman told

UN asks Russia for answers about bombed Syria hospitals

The UN’s aid chief has asked Russia to explain how it uses data on the location of Syrian hospitals and clinics following a string of attacks on health facilities. Mark Lowcock, the under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, told the Security Council he was “not sure” hospitals that share coordinates of their location under a UN de-confliction system will be protected. More than 23 hospitals have been hit by attacks since Russia-backed Syrian forces launched an offensive in the rebel-controlled Idlib region in late April, according to the UN. On June 20, an ambulance transporting a wounded woman in southern Idlib was hit, killing the woman and three medical workers. “I have written to the Russian Federation to request information as to how the details provided through the de-confliction mechanism are used,” Lowcock told the council. Russia, which backs Syrian forces in their offensive in the northwest, has firmly denied that the bombing campaign has targeted hospitals in

Updated Predictions for NBA’s Top Free Agents Based on Latest Rumors

Image
0 of 7 Chris Szagola/Associated Press With NBA free agency less than a week away, we’re getting a clearer picture of where the top stars will land. Sifting through rumors and trying to pull back the curtain on where Kawhi Leonard , Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving will sign is a difficult task, especially when the players themselves may not have even decided yet. This isn’t just a three-horse race, either. Others such as Nikola Vucevic, D’Angelo Russell and Al Horford will affect the market. Jimmy Butler appears to be a wild card, and Kemba Walker’s looming supermax decision will keep the Charlotte Hornets afloat or possibly complete another team’s Big Three. Based on the latest rumors, here’s where some of the top free agents of 2019 will sign. 1 of 7 Fernando Medina/Getty Images Vucevic is perhaps the best center on the market and should draw interest from any team in need of a do-it-all big man. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported during the NBA draft that both

In leaked email, Elon Musk says Tesla is very close to setting a record for deliveries in one quarter. But whether the company pulls it off comes down to one of the things it struggles with most

Tesla is close to setting a record for the number of vehicles delivered in one quarter, and delivery logistics will play an important role in deciding whether that record is broken, CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday in an email to employees. “We already have enough vehicle orders to set a record, but the right cars are not yet all in the right locations,” Musk said. “Logistics and final delivery are extremely important, as well as finding demand for vehicle variants that are available locally, but can’t reach people who ordered that variant before end of quarter.” The current quarterly delivery record, 90,700 vehicles, was set during the fourth quarter of 2018. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The email reiterates a sentiment Musk expressed at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting on June 11, during which he said the company had a “decent shot” of breaking its quarterly delivery record. Internal documents viewed by Business Insider suggested that the electric

5SOS Gave Their ‘Dancing With A Stranger’ Cover A Sneaky Surprise Ending

A month after debuting the new single “ Easier ,” 5 Seconds of Summer are continuing to tease their impending fourth album era. While visiting BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge on Tuesday (June 25), the Aussie band broke out a cover of Sam Smith and Normani’s sultry duet, “ Dancing With A Stranger .” Telling host Clara Amfo about their cover choice, the guys explained , “We love this song, and the sonic of it and the lyric really relates to our album coming up, so it makes sense.” For 5SOS’s version, Luke Hemmings and Calum Hood traded verses, while Ashton Irwin and Michael Clifford joined them on the harmony-heavy choruses. And in an imaginative twist, they ended their cover with a little interpolation of “Latch,” Smith’s breakout collaboration with Disclosure. Prior to their cover, 5SOS told Amfo all about the personalized mat they brought to the Live Lounge to perform on. “They’re our personal icons,” Irwin explained, describing the mat’s different symbols. “There’s four artists in th

Former special counsel Robert Mueller agrees to testify before Congress in July

The former special counsel Robert Mueller agreed to publicly testify before two House committees “in open session” on July 17, according to a joint statement from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff. Nadler and Schiff said in the statement that they “look forward to hearing his testimony, as do all Americans.” “Americans have demanded to hear directly from the Special Counsel so they can understand what he and his team examined, uncovered, and determined about Russia’s attack on our democracy, the Trump campaign’s acceptance and use of that help, and President Trump and his associates’ obstruction of the investigation into that attack,” the statement reads. Schiff said the two hearings will be back-to-back, starting with the House Judiciary Committee hearing. Mueller’s decision to testify comes after House lawmakers issued subpoenas to the former special counsel: “One way or another, we expect him to testify,” Schif

Khashoggi killing: UN rapporteur Callamard to present report

Agnes Callamard, the United Nations  special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, is set to present her report on the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi . Callamard’s presentation before the UN Human Rights Council in the Swiss city of Geneva is set to start at 13:00 GMT on Wednesday, and will be followed by a news conference. In her 100-page report, which was made public on June 19, Callamard says that Khashoggi’s killing at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October last year constituted a premeditated extrajudicial killing for which Saudi Arabia’s leadership was responsible . The report also concluded that  Saudi Arabia’s  Crown Prince  Mohammed bin Salman , also known as MBS,  should be investigated regarding the incident. Saudi Arabia carries UN Human Rights Council membership, and its representatives may be in the room while Callamard presents her findings.  The killing of Khashoggi by a team of Saudi operatives inside the consulate on October 2 provoked outrag

Mike Trout Is Built for Anaheim, but He Is Still Philly’s Guy

Image
Not long before signing a North American team sports-record $426.5 million extension this spring, Mike Trout was in the clubhouse shower following a spring training workout when Jo Adell, the Los Angeles Angels ‘ top prospect, walked into the room. Trout graciously motioned that a particular showerhead was open and then disappeared to towel off. Adell accepted the invitation and lathered up. Then, suddenly, the jet stream became scalding hot. He jerked back from the spray, momentarily confused. He realized he had heard the flush of a toilet just moments earlier. Then he saw Trout peeking around the corner and howling with laughter. “That sounds exactly like Mike,” Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Trout buddy Carson Wentz says. “I can see that for sure.” “He definitely likes his jokes,” says Ron Tobolski, a high school teammate of Trout’s and close friend. “That’s how he is. Laid-back, likes to have fun, a funny, really nice person.” Three months later, millions richer, tethe

How Toy Story 4’s Bo Peep Went From Damsel In Distress To ‘Dame In Charge’

Image
For 24 years, Toy Story fans have grown accustomed to a Bo Peep who exists to lift Woody up when he needs a boost. “She’s always been this kind of quietly strong character,” producer Jonas Rivera told MTV News. “Every time Woody gets kind of turned upside down a little bit in the story, she’s the one to say, no, look at your boot and remember who you are.” She fulfills that role that women are so often given — the one that solidifies the idea that a woman’s duty is to be there for her man, the one that implies a woman needs a man. We see it from the very first time we meet her, in Toy Story ’s opening scene: Bo Peep was caught in the middle of a stick-up. Mr. Potato Head was maniacal, holding all the toys hostage as he plotted to make it out of the bank with a sack full of loot. Bo pleaded for someone to help them — she certainly wasn’t equipped to save the day with her fragile porcelain skin and perfectly puffed frock. And right on cue, Sheriff Woody arrived on the scene to play t

D’Angelo Russell Rumors: Suns’ Devin Booker Campaigned; Latest on Lakers Reunion

Image
Chris Szagola/Associated Press The future of restricted free agent D’Angelo Russell likely hinges on the futures of Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant . If the pair choose to sign with the Brooklyn Nets , Russell will have a new home next season. But where? One possibility, according to ESPN.com’s Zach Lowe , is Phoenix: “The Suns will sign a veteran point guard, and Devin Booker has campaigned for Russell—a close friend. But other voices within the Suns may not share Booker’s unabashed enthusiasm, sources say. They have only about $14 million or so in cap space as of now. We’ll see how Phoenix approaches the point guard market.” Other possibilities are the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks , though both seem like long shots, per Lowe: “There is at least a kernel of truth to the Lakers’ interest in a reunion, sources say, but L.A. has a lot to sort out. Russell fits the Knicks’ timeline in case they strike out on bigger fish, but all indications are that New York will pur

Facebook is building a dedicated news tab that could include paying publishers to participate — here’s everything we know

Facebook is moving ahead with plans to create dedicated news section that publishers could get paid for. Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg floated the idea earlier this year to create a place for users who want more news. The tech giant has since begun talking to publishers and hiring to support it. Facebook execs have been holding one-on-one meetings to get feedback on the news tab and other products from publishers that have shown interest in being early to try out new Facebook products in the past. The goal is to roll out the tab by the end of the year. The discussions are being led by Shelley Venus and Anne Kornblut, two Facebook executives who have news backgrounds and are respected in the news industry.
